We often assume Christmas has been celebrated since the birth of Christ. However, Christmas as a festival or holiday did not start until some years after Christ’s birth and death. Even the actual date of Christ’s birth is in question because of reference to multiple calendars over the years.

Christmas is an annual festival celebrated to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, mainly on 25 December as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world. It is both a sacred religious holiday and a worldwide cultural and commercial event.

How did the Christmas celebration start?


Some theorists believe that the celebration of Christmas is related to the Jewish festival of Lights, during which Jesus was born. Others associate it with the Roman holiday of Saturnalia, which was a celebration of the birth of several Roman gods.

The early Christian community began celebrating Christmas in Rome around 336 (but it did not become a major Christian festival until the 9th century). Many Christmas traditions, such as decorating trees, began in Germany and later spread to other parts of the world, most notably in England and the United States.

Is Christmas Really the Day Jesus Was Born?

Some theorists believe that the actual birthday of Jesus was not December 25. 25 is not the date mentioned in the Bible as the day of Jesus’s birth; the Bible is actually silent on the day or the time of year when Mary was said to have given birth to him in Bethlehem. Most Christians celebrate December 25 as the birthday of Jesus Christ. In the first two Christian centuries, few have claimed true knowledge of the day or year in which he was born the oldest record of Christmas celebration is found in a Roman almanac that tells of Christ’s Nativity festival led by the church of Rome in 336 A.D.The exact reason for celebrating Christmas on 25 December is unclear.  In the fourth century, church officials decided to institute the birth of Jesus as a holiday.

A Christmas Carol. In Prose. Being a Ghost Story of Christmas, commonly known as A Christmas Carol, is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in London by Chapman & Hall in 1843 and illustrated by John Leech. 

 The story’s message-the importance of charity and goodwill towards all humankind-struck a powerful chord in the United States and England and showed members of Victorian society the benefits of celebrating the holiday.

  • On 26 June 1870, Christmas was declared a federal holiday in the United States.
  • “Jingle Bells”, originally called “One Horse Open Sleeve”, was composed in Massachusetts as a Thanksgiving song by James Pierpont and the first song sung on 15 December 1965 by astronauts Tom Stafford and Wally Schirra Was when they were in space.
